It was over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins, Martin Shaw
& Michael Hill-Smith realised a dream of creating wine
together. From there Shaw + Smith was born.
With a vision to create wines exclusively from Adelaide Hills
fruit that rank amongst Australia’s best, Shaw + Smith
specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, cool-climate
Shiraz and more recently Pinot Noir and Riesling.
Martin and Michael hold considerable pedigree within
winemaking circles. Martin, a graduate of South Australia’s
“Roseworthy College” is a founder of the “Flying
Winemaker” network and continues to consult on wine
projects around the world. Michael is Australia’s first
“Master of Wine” and the first Master of Wine from outside
of Europe. Michael achieved this prestigious title in 1998.
Such is the regard in which Michael is held, in 2008,
he was awarded an “Order of Australia” medal for his
contribution to the Australian wine industry.
